Background of the Study

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels due to insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production. In Nigeria, diabetes prevalence has been increasing, with poor awareness and self-management contributing to severe complications such as organ damage, cardiovascular diseases, and amputations (WHO, 2024).

Awareness campaigns play a crucial role in educating patients about diabetes, promoting self-management practices such as dietary control, physical activity, blood glucose monitoring, and medication adherence (Adebayo & Salami, 2024). In Kano State, various diabetes awareness initiatives have been introduced to improve knowledge and encourage proactive health-seeking behaviors. However, the effectiveness of these campaigns in influencing self-management remains unclear. This study evaluates the impact of diabetes awareness campaigns on self-management practices among patients in Kano State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite growing efforts to raise awareness about diabetes, many patients in Kano State struggle with self-management due to limited knowledge and misconceptions about the disease (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Poor adherence to dietary recommendations, reluctance to seek medical care, and inadequate blood sugar monitoring contribute to worsening health outcomes.

This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of diabetes awareness campaigns in improving self-management behaviors among diabetic patients in Kano State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of diabetes awareness among patients in Kano State.
  2. To examine the impact of awareness campaigns on diabetes self-management practices.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the effectiveness of diabetes awareness programs.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of diabetes awareness among patients in Kano State?
  2. How do awareness campaigns influence self-management practices among diabetic patients?
  3. What are the challenges affecting the effectiveness of diabetes awareness programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Diabetes awareness campaigns have no significant impact on self-management practices.
  2. There is no significant relationship between diabetes awareness and medication adherence.
  3. The effectiveness of diabetes awareness campaigns is not significantly influenced by socio-cultural factors.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on diabetic patients in Kano State, evaluating the impact of awareness campaigns on their self-management. Limitations include differences in educational background, access to healthcare services, and varying levels of campaign exposure among participants.

Definitions of Terms

  • Diabetes Mellitus: A chronic metabolic disorder resulting in high blood glucose levels.
  • Self-Management: The ability of patients to manage their health condition through medication adherence, lifestyle modifications, and regular monitoring.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Organized efforts to educate individuals and communities about health-related issues.
