Background of the Study
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels due to insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production. In Nigeria, diabetes prevalence has been increasing, with poor awareness and self-management contributing to severe complications such as organ damage, cardiovascular diseases, and amputations (WHO, 2024).
Awareness campaigns play a crucial role in educating patients about diabetes, promoting self-management practices such as dietary control, physical activity, blood glucose monitoring, and medication adherence (Adebayo & Salami, 2024). In Kano State, various diabetes awareness initiatives have been introduced to improve knowledge and encourage proactive health-seeking behaviors. However, the effectiveness of these campaigns in influencing self-management remains unclear. This study evaluates the impact of diabetes awareness campaigns on self-management practices among patients in Kano State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite growing efforts to raise awareness about diabetes, many patients in Kano State struggle with self-management due to limited knowledge and misconceptions about the disease (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Poor adherence to dietary recommendations, reluctance to seek medical care, and inadequate blood sugar monitoring contribute to worsening health outcomes.
This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of diabetes awareness campaigns in improving self-management behaviors among diabetic patients in Kano State.
